Rab Island

2025

Reaserch in 2025 (5-25 September) focused on the islet of Lukovac, where excavations were carried out in four trenches and the area of the so-called ramp. These allowed to determine the extent of occupation in various areas of the site, and collect data mostly on the second phase of use of the fort, pending 14C dates. In the southern part of the island, on a thin strip of land that connects the island’s plateau and the rocky souther shores, a structure made with ample quantites of stones and bound by mortar was detected, cleaned and documented. With all probability pertaining to an access structure, a sort of ramp leading from the shores to the sommital part of the islet. During this campaign samples of mortar were collected from all visible structures and from the trenches.

A second focus of the 2025 campaign was the fort of St. Damian (and Cosmas) at Barbat. Recently, the whole site was cleaned from vegetation, permitting us to document it with several aerial sensors and better inspect certain structures, such as the NE cistern. 3D models and orthophotos were created.

Danilo

2025

Research at Danilo in 2025 focused on finishing the excavations at Trench 1 near the church of st Daniel. The first phase of burial was explored, and an early Modern tomb was excavated. Underneath these, the previously discovered door slab could be better explored, and a earlier floor was discovered. The collected data is crucial in understanding the phases of use, readaptation and abandonment of the Roman structures in this part of the site. All human remains were analysed on site, while studies on the materials were carried out subsequently, in November 2025.
